Custom Resins

Tailoring the Transition Temperature

CRG Industries offers custom resins with tailored transition temperatures to fit a customer’s specific application. Whether as part of a reinforced composite or as a standalone material, custom resin technology offers affordable solutions when

the requirements of an application cannot be met by currently available materials. Expertise in formulation and molecular design enables our team to understand how materials will interact at a molecular level so they can optimize material properties for a certain application.

In choosing the glass transition temperature for your application, the desired forming temperature as well as the transition range must be taken into account. Forming can take place at a storage modulus value of 500 MPa, but this will significantly decrease the life of the polymer. As the modulus lowers, the material becomes more compliant and resilient. Forming at a low modulus leads to increased material lifetime. CRG Industries suggests the Tform take place at <5 MPa.

  Possible Transition Temperature Ranges
Styrene SMP   45 ºC to 95 ºC
  Epoxy SMP  35º C to 105 ºC

Development of Custom Resins

If your application requires tailoring of other properties besides transition temperature, CRG Industries can also development a more customized resin. This type of customization

requires a set-up fee that depends on the properties needing to be modified. Development begins by assessing the specific properties needed for a specific application. Chemical engineers design custom resins with two different approaches: reformulating existing resins with additives or developing an entirely new resin system through molecular design and synthesis.

By using commercially available materials, research engineers can achieve property enhancements through blending, compounding, or incorporating additives. This approach offers an affordable and timely solution for moderate performance improvements over existing materials. To maximize efficiency, we have extensive in-house characterization capabilities to provide rapid feedback on formulation iterations.

For applications requiring radical property modification, a reformulation approach may not be suitable. In such cases, we can design and synthesize an entirely new material to meet the target performance requirements. Our experience with custom resin formulation has resulted in successes with engineered plastics, epoxy, cyanate ester, and other thermosets used in manufacturing technology, aerospace, and other applications. Cornerstone Research Group’s patented shape memory polymer, Veriflex®, has been tailored extensively since its invention and initial development. We have customized Veriflex resins to perform in a wide range of applications such as custom reusable tooling, reusable molds, replica optics, biological applications, morphing aircraft systems, and deployment mechanisms for outer space.
