Veriflex E2 is a fully formable, thermoset,
shape memory polymer (SMP) resin system. Cornerstone Research
Group Inc. (CRG) developed this two-part resin system consisting
of the base resin, Veriflex E2a, and the curing agent, Veriflex
E2b. The resin and the curing agent are sold separately.
Cured Veriflex E2 combines shape memory properties
with the high toughness and strength of epoxy. When heated
above its activation
temperature, cured Veriflex E2 changes
from a rigid plastic to an elastic state. It can then be twisted,
pulled, bent, and stretched. When cooled, the polymer hardens
and can hold its deformed shape. If heated again, it returns
to the shape in which it was cured. This process can be repeated
without loss of the memory shape or degradation of the material.
Epoxy is a well understood and commonly used
resin system. It provides convenient processing, usage, and
property modification. Veriflex E2 is a high-performance material
formulated from commercially available resins and curing agents.
It can be cast and cured into a variety of “memorized”
shapes, depending on the application requirements.
Epoxy SMP has a very sharp modulus transition
curve, yielding a quick recovery to the “memory” shape
upon heating past the transition temperature.
Benefits
Toughness
Recovery of memorized shape even after repeated
deformation
Ability to change from a rigid polymer to
rubbery elastomer
Over 100% elongation in elastic state
Low viscosity for easy processing (RTM or
VARTM)
Transition temperature of approximately 104
°C (219 °F)
Aesthetic clarity
Machinability once cured

Veriflex is characterized by triggering
segments. At a temperature above Tg (Tform)
the material can be easily deformed. The deformed shape will be
maintained when the material is cooled below the Tg (Tcool).
The material will "remember" or return to its original
shape when it is heated to a temperature above the Tg
again. The material should be manipulated while in its fully elastic
state and not in the temperature transition range shown below.
